Mexico is experiencing one of its most widespread and intense droughts in decades. Nearly 85 percent of the country is facing drought conditions as of April 15, 2021. Large reservoirs across the country are standing at exceptionally low levels, straining water resources for drinking, farming, and irrigation. The mayor of Mexico City called it the worst drought in 30 years for the city, which is home to about 9 million people.

According to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service, the northwest and northeast have recently moved from severe to extreme drought. Agriculture analysts project some crop production to suffer, such as white corn in Sinaloa (Mexico’s largest corn producer).

An intense dry season across some states of Mexico, led to a water shortage. Without sufficient rainfall, the danger was that the future supply from the reservoirs would be incrementally reduced. To be prepared for these eventualities, a storage basin was proposed to collect water, storing it for future use when required.

The client wants to use geomembrane to build water reservoirs for agricultural irrigation, rationally utilize limited water resources, reduce losses, reduce water source control costs, and provide strong support for agriculture. So we provided the customer with factory certificate and free samples. The customer was very satisfied after receiving the samples, and soon we got the order and start the production.


Solution

We recommended our 1mm thickness HDPE geomembrane to our customer for use in his water reservoirs project. Because the geomembrane is exposed to the sun, it is necessary to use high quality 100% vergin material geomembrane lining at the bottom of the pond to extend the service life and reduce the impact on the environment. 

According to the size of the water reservoirs given by our customer, we calculated that our customer needs 27,000 square meters of 1mm HDPE geomembrana. Maintaining clean soil while preventing water seepage into the ground water, thus precluding their contamination. Water reservoirs lining with synthetic Geomembranes enables complete separation between the fluids mass and the soil.

In cases where clean water is stored within the reservoir, lining the reservoir with HDPE Geomembranes will prevent the loss of expensive water and protect the stability of the embankments and the nearby structures.
